Before you place any Sealed Air packaging order, check three things: the material type, the RoHS/REACH compliance paperwork, and the product traceability (the logo matters). Doing this before you pay is the difference between a smooth shipment and an expensive disaster.
I'm an office administrator for a 120-person parts manufacturer. I manage all our packaging and supply ordering—roughly $200,000 annually across 8 vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I made a rookie mistake: I trusted a supplier's description at face value. Is nylon polyethylene? Short answer: no
This is one of those material questions that trips people up. Nylon is a polyamide; polyethylene is a polyolefin. They're chemically different families with different properties. Nylon is stronger and more heat-resistant, but it absorbs moisture and costs more. Polyethylene is lightweight, chemically resistant, and the base material for Sealed Air's Cell-Aire foam.
People assume the terms are interchangeable because they're both "plastics." If you've ever made that assumption, you know how confusing material specs can be. But the consequences are real: choose nylon when you need polyethylene and you'll overpay. Choose polyethylene when you need nylon's strength and your product may arrive damaged. I've seen buyers compare HDPE plastic parts to foam packaging as if they're alternatives. They're not. HDPE gives you structural rigidity; foam gives you cushioning. If you need impact protection, a rigid plastic part isn't going to absorb shock the way a foam cushion will. And if you need a reusable structural component, foam won't hold its shape under load. The right choice depends on what your product needs, not on which material sounds "more premium."

Here's a lighter example. Polyethylene foam board has made its way into our office beyond shipping. Our marketing team used cut foam boards for trade show displays, and HR used them to create lightweight room dividers for an event. Foam board decor projects are popular for exactly this reason: the material is easy to cut, shape, and print on, while staying durable and moisture-resistant. The same material that protects industrial parts in transit can also be the backdrop for a product launch.

Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. That sounds like a cliché until you've lived it. When I built my 12-point checklist after that third mistake, I started with the categories that had actually bitten me:

- RoHS and REACH certificates requested and attached to the purchase order

Seriously, this list is the cheapest insurance you can buy. It doesn't just prevent mistakes on your side—it makes the supplier accountable before they have your money.
There's something satisfying about a cleanly executed order. After all the stress of early mistakes, seeing a shipment arrive on time, with the right material, the right certificates, and no emergency emails—that's the payoff. It doesn't happen by luck. It happens because someone spent 15 minutes on the front end.

People think expensive vendors deliver better quality. The reality is, vendors who deliver better quality can charge more. The causation runs the other way. A supplier with real compliance systems, traceability, and reliable delivery has higher operating costs—and that shows up in the price. So don't start with "who's cheaper?" Start with "who has the systems to do what they promise?" The cheapest quote in the world is worthless if it arrives without compliance certificates—or with the wrong material.
Decision doubt is normal (but verification shrinks it)
Even after choosing our current Sealed Air supplier, I kept second-guessing. What if the quality wasn't as good as the samples? The two weeks until delivery were stressful. I'm not 100% sure when the anxiety faded, but after 40+ successful orders, I stopped worrying. That doubt is normal—but you can shrink it dramatically by doing the verification work before the order.
When you can skip the deep check
Not every order needs the full treatment. If you're buying one sheet of foam board for a school project or a small batch for an internal event, you don't need a RoHS certificate. Don't over-engineer a one-off purchase—that's its own waste of time.
But if the packaging goes into a customer-facing product, if it protects something high-value, or if you're in a regulated industry, take the extra 15 minutes. The cost of being wrong is almost always higher than the cost of checking.
Even perfect checks fail sometimes. A supplier can have a bad batch. A courier can mishandle a box. But when that happens, the documentation you collected becomes your recovery tool. It's not about being perfect—it's about making sure the mistakes that happen are fixable.
Bottom line: verify before you pay, document what you verified, and let those records protect you when things go sideways. That's how procurement stops being a source of stress and becomes a source of quiet confidence.
