Sealed Air 'Plastic Free' Packaging Is the Wrong Question. Here's What to Ask Instead.

If you've ever typed "sealed-air" or "sealed air plastic free packaging" into a search box, you probably wanted one thing: a package that won't cause trouble in a sustainability audit. I get it. Here's what you need to know: "plastic-free" is not a material specification. It's a fear with a label attached.

The Surface Problem: You're Looking for a Label

When you search for "sealed air plastic free packaging," you're probably trying to avoid a few things: petroleum-based film, microplastics, recyclability headaches, or bad press. Those are all legitimate concerns. But the search results don't tell you what you actually need. You'll see products made from paper, products made from recycled plastic, and products that are technically free of virgin plastic. These all have different environmental profiles.

The deeper problem starts when "plastic-free" is written into a spec without defining what "plastic" excludes.

The Deep Problem: "Plastic" Is a Category, Not a Material

It took me four years and more than 150 material reviews to understand this: the word "plastic" carries a ton of baggage, but not all of it is technical. Plastic is a category of materials, not a single thing. It covers thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, and fluoropolymers. It includes PTFE, nylon, PVC, polyurethane, and—depending on who's defining it—silicone.

Is PTFE plastic?

The question comes up in nearly every material review I run: is PTFE plastic? Yes. PTFE, or polytetrafluoroethylene, is a fluoropolymer. It's a thermoplastic in the sense that it's a polymer that melts—though it has a very high melting point and is usually processed by sintering rather than injection molding. If your spec says "no plastic," a PTFE seal or bearing is not compliant. Whether that's a good thing depends on your application. For chemical resistance and low friction, PTFE is outstanding. Banning it because of the word "plastic" is a classic case of the label doing the thinking for you.

What about silicone foam cord?

Then there's silicone foam cord. Most people call it rubber. It's an elastomer, which is a polymer. Is it a plastic? In common usage, usually not. But if you're writing a contract, "usually" is not a specification. If you say "no plastic" to avoid environmental criticism, silicone foam cord is not your target. But if you mean "no synthetic polymers," then silicone is out. You need to be explicit, otherwise your supplier will make the call for you—and you may not like their answer.

What about plastic hydraulic hose?

In industrial settings, the confusion gets real. Take plastic hydraulic hose: a hose family with a thermoplastic inner tube—often nylon, polyurethane, or PVC—reinforced with fiber or steel. A buyer might reject it on principle because the name says "plastic." But that hose can be the right part for high-pressure, chemical-resistant, lightweight requirements. The word "plastic" doesn't tell you whether it's recyclable, durable, or safe. It only tells you a family of chemistry.

So when you ask "is PTFE plastic" or "is silicone a plastic," you're asking the wrong kind of question. The right questions are: What does this material need to do? What happens to it at end-of-life? Does the claim match the reality?

The Cost of Ambiguous "No Plastic" Specs

The most expensive lesson I learned came from my own assumption. We ordered a custom gasket with a spec that said "no plastic." I assumed that meant no thermoplastics. Didn't verify. The vendor delivered PTFE because their production line was set up for chemical resistance. Functionally, the part was perfect. But it violated the written spec. We rejected the batch, they redid it in a different material, and the total cost of correction was about $22,000—including the delayed launch. The material wasn't the problem. The spec was.

There's a pattern here. Another customer built a sustainability report around "we eliminated plastic flexible packaging." But their new paper mailer had a polymer coating to protect against moisture. They wanted to call it plastic-free. Under FTC Green Guides, that claim needed substantiation—if the coating is a plastic, "plastic-free" is misleading. Per the FTC (ftc.gov, 16 CFR Part 260), environmental claims like "recyclable" must be accurate and qualified. We had to revise the claim and the report. That kind of correction is expensive in a way that doesn't show up on a purchase order.

According to USPS Business Mail 101 (pe.usps.com/businessmail101), a large envelope can be up to 12 x 15 x 0.75 inches. If it's thicker, it's a package with a higher rate. A "plastic-free" mailer that doesn't meet this functional spec will cost you more than a well-designed recyclable plastic mailer—ironic, but true.

The pattern is always the same: decisions get made based on a word, not on evidence. And the cost shows up later, in rejected batches, failed audits, or shipping surprises.

Prevention Over Cure: What to Do Instead

Bottom line: stop writing "plastic-free" as a standalone requirement. It's not actionable. The checklist I created after my third spec mistake has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework. Five minutes of verification really does beat five days of correction.

  1. Define the function first. For a hydraulic hose: temperature, pressure, fluid compatibility. For a gasket: compression set, temperature range, UV resistance. For a mailer: dimensions, drop tests, USPS compliance.
  2. Name the materials you don't want. If you mean "no PVC," say "no PVC." If you mean "no PTFE," say "no PTFE." If you mean "no virgin plastic," say that too. Do not use "plastic" as a catch-all.
  3. Specify the end-of-life. Curbside recyclable? Industrial recyclable? Compostable? In which geography? This is where real environmental impact is decided.
  4. Use official documentation. On the Sealed Air official website, for example, each product line lists material composition and recyclability status. Use that as a starting point—and ask your supplier for the same level of detail.

So, Is "Sealed Air Plastic Free Packaging" the Right Search?

Not really. The better search is "verified recyclable packaging" or "packaging with defined end-of-life." When you move from labels to specifications, the whole conversation changes. A material is not good or bad simply because it's a plastic. It's good or bad based on how it's designed, used, and recovered.

I'm not saying plastic-free products don't have a place. They do. But if you write a spec around a label, you'll get a product that meets the label—and sometimes misses the point.
