Sealed Air's Sustainability Report Made Me Rethink How I Buy Packaging—and What I Ask Every Supplier

I almost cost my company a client because of a recycling label.

It happened in 2024. Our marketing team wanted '100% recyclable' shipping mailers for a product launch. I found a supplier whose price was about 30% lower than our current vendor. The mailers looked sturdy, the samples passed the drop test, and I placed an order for 5,000.

Then a retail customer asked us to substantiate the claim. The supplier sent a one-page PDF with a green banner and the words 'eco-friendly.' No data. No certification. That distinction matters more than most people realize. But here's the blind spot: PET is recyclable in theory. In practice, recovery depends on color, additives, labels, and anything attached to the package. If components aren't designed for recovery, the whole package can end up in the landfill.

Sustainability reports are not compliance documents

Here's what I learned the hard way: 'it's compliant' and 'here's the documentation' are different things. A supplier can say their packaging meets the requirements. But if a customer or auditor asks for proof, you need a declaration, test report, or material data sheet. Seeing those two documents side by side made me realize that 'sustainable' isn't a feature. It's a set of engineering decisions. And I wasn't qualified to evaluate those decisions on my own. I needed suppliers who gave me details instead of adjectives.

What I do now

I'm not going to pretend I became a packaging engineer. But I changed how I buy, and the checklist is short.

  1. Ask for the resin identification. If someone says 'plastic,' ask which plastic. If they can't answer, that's an answer.
  2. Ask for product-level compliance documentation. If you need RoHS/REACH, get a declaration or test report for the specific item, not a general statement.
  3. Check recyclability claims against the FTC Green Guides. If the supplier can't explain where the packaging is recyclable, the claim doesn't meet the standard.
  4. Think about every component. A paperboard card plus a plastic hook is mixed material, and mixed material is harder to recycle.
  5. Run the shipping numbers. USPS publishes size rules. Measure the final packaged product, not just the sample in a catalog.

I also keep Sealed Air's sustainability report in my reference files. Not because I buy everything from them, but because it gives me context on how a packaging manufacturer talks about recovery and material design. It helps me separate genuine effort from greenwashing.

I'm not anti-plastic either. Plastic is sometimes the most sustainable option because it's lightweight, durable, and cheap to transport. The problem isn't plastic. The problem is unexamined materials stitched together into a package that looks fine and can't be recovered.

The supplier who couldn't substantiate their claim probably wasn't trying to deceive anyone. They just didn't understand the complexity either. But in B2B, understanding the details is part of the job. Once you've absorbed the cost of guessing, you never buy the same way again.
